Happy 155th Birthday Canada – Let’s Clean-up for Moving Day eh!

Can you believe it is already 155 years since Canada first celebrated Canada Day in 1867? There will be fireworks, parades, barbecues, concerts, carnivals, fairs, and picnics in all provinces on Friday, July 1st, 2022. Whether you are going to be active or take it relaxed, everyone is looking forward to some long weekend fun. But as any Montrealer will know, July 1st is also Moving Day!! Whether you’re ending a lease or selling a house, the former home must be left in tip-top condition. Let us help you compile a move-out cleaning checklist for yourself or a cleaner.

What’s on the move-out cleaning checklist?

Your move-out cleaning checklist will depend on the size of the property and how clean it is already. To help you, we’ve compiled a comprehensive move-out cleaning checklist that you can use as a starting point.

Checklist:

  1. Vacuum carpeted areas

  2. Dust and wipe down all surfaces

  3. Clean inside cabinets

  4. Wipe down appliances

  5. Deep clean ovens

  6. Clean and sanitize the fridge and freezer

  7. Complete bathroom clean

  8. Mop floors

Let's break it down a bit more

Vacuum carpeted areas

It is important to give a carpeted home a once-over with the vacuum – keep in mind the less vacuumed places such as closets, stairs, nooks, and other hard-to-reach areas.

Dust and wipe down all surfaces

Make sure to wipe down kitchen countertops, bathroom countertops, bookshelves, window panes, fireplace mantles, and other hard surfaces.

Clean inside cabinets

Not a usual activity but give your cabinets some love – Kitchen cabinets, in particular, tend to accumulate crumbs and other residues from cooking over the years.

Wipe down appliances

Over time, stainless steel appliances become covered in fingerprints and markings. Make sure to wipe down your fridge with either an all-purpose spray or a vinegar and water mixture. Don’t forget to wipe down and clean out the microwave as well.

Deep clean ovens

The oven is usually forgotten but make sure to give it a nice clean. Many ovens now have a self-clean function that will have the open cleaned in 2-3 hours. If not, try cleaning it with simple water, vinegar, and baking soda mixture. Combine the water and baking soda to make a paste and apply it throughout the oven.

Clean and sanitize the fridge and freezer

Empty the fridge and freezer of any remaining contents and start cleaning. All surfaces should be wiped down with a disinfectant spray. Make sure to eliminate any remaining food crumbs as well.

Complete bathroom clean

Besides the kitchen, bathrooms are usually heavy traffic areas of the home. Ensure all toilets, showers, bathtubs, and sinks are thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned. Make sure there are no molds or moisture areas.

Mop floors

Once all surfaces have been wiped down and vacuumed, end your move-out cleaning by giving the floors a good mop. Pinesol or Mr. Clean are great options to give the floor a good clean and also leave the space smelling fresh and clean!

Should you hire a cleaning service?

To clean the home, you have two options: you can either clean it yourself or you can hire a professional cleaning service to do it. Adding a move to an already busy schedule can be very stressful, but that is where a professional cleaning service can help you alleviate the workload.

When should you do the move-out cleaning?

Not sure when to do the deep clean? Ideally, it is best to clean the home after all of your furniture and personal items have been removed.

Not only will this ensure that you can clean every nook in the home, but it will also simplify and make your cleaning process easier.
